You want a cast iron Dutch oven, but whether or not it’s enameled doesn’t matter. Many home cooks prefer the enameled ones because they are easier to care for (and you get to choose from a wide variety of fun colors!). But if you ever plan to use it outside in a fire pit, you’ll want an uncoated Dutch oven.
Can you use Dutch ovens on the stove and in the oven?
Yes! That’s one of the great things about them. Dutch ovens are safe to use on the stove and in the oven, so you can go straight from searing and sautéing to baking and braising in one pot.
How do I clean a Dutch oven?
If it’s enameled, you can clean it in the sink with hot, soapy water as you would any pot. I go into all the questions you may have in my post about the care and cleaning of enameled cast iron. To clean an uncoated cast iron Dutch oven, follow my cast iron cleaning tips to clean it with the same methods as other cast iron cookware.
Are Dutch ovens safe for all stovetops?
Yes, they are considered safe for all of the common stovetop surfaces — gas, electric, ceramic, and induction. They are very heavy, though, so take extra care when placing them on a glass stovetop and don’t drag them along the glass.
Now that you have the recipes, you can enjoy the many benefits of cooking in a Dutch oven! There’s nothing like pulling a steaming roast or hearty stew out of the oven after it has been cooking to perfection all afternoon.
