My newest soup recipe is this pizza soup, and it has rave reviews from my family!
We love all things pizza — Dutch oven pizza, baked pizza rolls, you name it. I even make my own pizza dough with freshly milled flour!
So it only makes sense that a pizza-inspired soup would be a hit in my house.
This pizza soup has bold flavors, a rich tomato broth, and lots of cheesy goodness (just like pizza!).

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick to make: This is the easiest soup recipe! It’s ready in under 30 minutes — perfect for those nights when you need dinner on the table ASAP.
- One-pot meal: With plenty of protein, veggies, and flavor, this soup is worthy of the one-pot meal! If you’re feeling fancy, you can always add a side of bread (I recommend homemade freshly milled baguettes), but it’s not necessary for a nutritious and satisfying meal.
- Use what you have: When I first made pizza soup, the recipe called for pepperoni, which I did not have. I substituted bacon and ended up liking it way more! This soup is very flexible and allows you to use up whatever veggies or meat you have on hand.
Ingredients
- Bacon: If you’ve ever had bacon on pizza, you can probably imagine how good it is in pizza soup. Honestly, you can never go wrong with bacon.
- Italian sausage: I think Italian sausage adds the best flavor, but you can also use ground beef or ground pork.
- Marinara sauce: You can use your favorite jarred marinara sauce, or homemade if you have it.
- Cheese: Shredded cheese on top of the soup is a must! I used cheddar cheese, but mozzarella would also be excellent. If you want to be a little more adventurous, you can use shredded cheese and ricotta, like I use to top my Dutch oven lasagna soup.

Variations
- Feel free to add additional veggies to your soup. It would taste great with spinach, kale, zucchini, or sautéed mushrooms.
- Noodles could also be a delicious addition. Shells, orzo, or macaroni would be my recommendations.
- Try different cheeses on top of your soup! I mentioned above that you can use ricotta or try different shredded cheese varieties, like mozzarella, parmesan, or provolone.
- Fresh herbs are always tasty if you have some on hand. Chopped fresh basil would add a zesty flavor to this soup.
How to Make Dutch Oven Pizza Soup
Step 1. Add the diced bacon to a Dutch oven and cook over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and drain the excess grease.
Step 2. Add the ground sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spatula. Add the onion and bell pepper, and cook until softened and the sausage is fully cooked.
Step 3. Add the broth, marinara sauce, and diced tomatoes.
Step 4. Add the bacon back into the pot and season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
Step 5. Serve hot and top with shredded mozzarella cheese if desired.
Tips + Notes
- Make sure everything is in small, bite-sized pieces so you don’t get one ingredient overpowering a bite. Take care to dice the bacon small and break up the Italian sausage as you brown it.
- I recommend tasting your soup and adjusting the salt accordingly — the amount you need will depend on how salty your broth is.
- This soup tastes even better the next day! Time in the fridge helps the flavors meld together. So don’t be afraid to make it in advance and reheat it on the stove.
What to Serve with Pizza Soup
Pizza soup is tasty and satiating all on its own, so sides are a totally optional addition to the meal. If you want to serve something alongside your soup, here are my recommendations:
- Cream cheese garlic bread
- Easy balsamic bruschetta
- Cheddar biscuits with freshly milled flour
- Homemade rolls with freshly milled flour
- Baked spinach artichoke dip with whole wheat artisan bread
Frequently Asked Questions
Pizza soup is just a meat and vegetable soup with a tomato broth that is inspired by pizza! It has marinara sauce in the broth, as well as ingredients that are commonly pizza toppings, such as bacon, Italian sausage, and bell peppers. We top each bowl with a sprinkle of shredded cheese, which gives it even more pizza flavor!
Yes, pizza soup freezes very well. Make sure it’s completely cool, then pack it into zip-top bags and freeze. I recommend double-bagging it to be safe against spills. When you’re ready to eat it, just thaw it partially at room temperature, then reheat the soup on the stove.
Yes! As long as your broth and Italian sausage don’t have any sneaky hidden gluten, this soup is naturally gluten-free.
Absolutely. Just skip the cheese at the end, or substitute your favorite dairy-free cheese.

I have this on the menu to try tonight – can’t wait! My question – step 3 mentions adding broth, but I don’t see broth in the ingredients list. How much does it call for?
Hi Sarah, I can’t wait for you to try it tonight! I am sorry I forgot to include the broth amounts. You will need 4 cups of chicken broth. I will update the post accordingly!
