If I had to choose, I’d say my family’s favorite meal is steak, in its many forms.

We don’t just stick to cast iron ribeye (though that is certainly a favorite) — we also enjoy less common dishes, like venison steak, hamburger steak, smothered pork steak , and even moose steak.

Ham steak is in the regular rotation, too, and we love it! I’ve experimented with different seasonings and cooking methods, and this glazed ham steak recipe is my all-time best.

Ham steak is one of the “fast food” meals that I keep in my back pocket for busy nights when I need something quick. It tastes much better than the drive-through, and it’s honestly faster!

Enjoy this ham steak recipe next time you need a quick meal that tastes amazing!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Sweet and savory: Ham steak is smoky and delicious, but the glaze really makes it something special. Made of Dijon, brown sugar, and hot sauce, the glaze gives this ham steak so much flavor with the perfect balance of sweet and savory!

Easy recipe: Ham steaks come pre-cooked, so they really just need a good sear and some seasoning! This is the perfect recipe for beginner cooks or those days you need something easy.

Quick to cook: As I said, ham steaks are already cooked! This recipe is so quick to make — it comes together in around 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Ham steak ingredients labeled on a kitchen counter.
  • Ham steak: You can find pre-cooked ham steaks at most grocery stores or butcher’s shops. You don’t have to use pre-cooked if you don’t want to; check out the ‘tips and notes’ section if you opt for uncooked.
  • Butter: Salted butter gives the best sear and flavor to these steaks.
  • Water: We’ll add water to the glaze to help the sugar dissolve and the ingredients come together. It will boil off as we reduce the glaze.
  • Brown sugar: Gives the glaze a sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Dijon mustard: I recommend ground mustard — whole grain doesn’t work well in the glaze.
  • Louisiana-style hot sauce: Whichever brand is your favorite!

Variations

  • I have made this with regular mustard, spicy mustard and even without mustard — all good options. My favorite glaze was the one with dijon, so that’s what made it in the final recipe.
  • This is also very good with maple syrup. What I do is cut the water in half and eliminate the brown sugar from the recipe, and use about 2 tbsp of maple syrup instead.

How to Make Ham Steak

Searing a ham steak in a cast iron skillet.

Step 1: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt completely. Place the ham steak in the skillet and sear for 2–3 minutes per side, until lightly browned.

Step 2: Remove the ham from the skillet and set aside. Reduce the heat to low and add the water, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and hot sauce to the skillet. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce is smooth.

Step 3: Return the ham steak to the skillet. Allow it to simmer in the glaze, flipping every minute or so to evenly coat for about 5 minutes.

Tips + Notes

  • You’ll notice the glaze will start to thicken up after the sugar is fully dissolved. That is when I like to add the ham steak back in.
  • It does have a touch of heat with the added hot sauce, but my kids still love it! If you’re sensitive to heat, you may want to leave it out.
  • This is made with precooked ham steaks, which is how they usually come. You don’t have to use precooked; just add a few extra minutes to allow it to cook through. Usually, it takes about 6-7 minutes per side to cook a ham steak through. Use an instant thermometer to check the internal temperature!

What to Serve with Ham Steak

Ham steak is a quick and easy main dish that pairs with a variety of sides! You can get creative with your sides and go as complicated or as simple as you’d like.

When I’m in a rush, I boil or roast some veggies, such as boiled asparagus or garlic parmesan brussels sprouts. Easy rice pilaf is the perfect grain dish that doesn’t take long at all.

On days I have a little more time to prepare the meal, I always make a delicious homemade bread. My go-tos are whole grain dinner rolls and cheesy Dutch oven bread.

Dutch oven French fries are always a winning side dish, as is my homemade vinegar coleslaw! You really can’t go wrong when pairing sides with ham steak — it is versatile and filling, so you have lots of flexibility with your meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ham steak?

Ham steak is a thick slice of pork cut from the leg of the pig. It typically comes precooked, so all you have to do is heat it up and season as desired. I have found ham steak to taste the best with a nice sear and a simple glaze.

How do you avoid drying out a ham steak?

Searing your steak in a hot preheated cast iron pan will heat it and give it a golden exterior while locking in the moisture. Adding a glaze also helps keep it moist.

Why is my ham steak so tough?

Ham steak can get tough if it’s overcooked. It’s important to remember that it is already thoroughly cooked when you purchase it, so you don’t need to leave it in the pan as long as you would other meats. Keep it quick when searing and glazing.

What do you do with leftover ham steak?

You can reheat your ham steak in a skillet, or repurpose it! Try chopping it up to add to cast iron quiche or using it in a hashbrown casserole with ham.
